Welcome to my blog, y'all!
I still have three months before I depart for Spain, but I thought it might be a good idea to set up this blog and get things organized before my trip begins.
First of all, let me tell you a little bit about my program and what you can expect to see me doing this summer. I will be participating in the KIIS Spain II study abroad program in Segovia, Spain. During this month-long program, I will further develop my Spanish language skills and immerse myself in Spanish life.
Located sixty miles north of Madrid, Segovia is small city and provincial capital in the foothills of the Guadarrama Mountains. The city boasts lots of traditional character of Castilla y León and has a very visible history that dates back to pre-Roman times. Segovia has a world-renowned castle, Roman aqueduct, many museums, and an old Jewish quarter. In addition, the city offers a weekly open-air market, picturesque plazas and cafés, a lively nightlife, and a plethora of cultural events.
Three professors are offering four advanced Spanish language, literature, and culture courses. Of the four courses offered, I will be taking Advanced Oral Spanish and Spanish Phonetics. I am most excited about the Spanish Phonetics course, as I hope to become a bilingual speech-language pathologist, and a firm understanding of Spanish phonetics is essential for that profession. I am confident that both courses will help me improve my Spanish pronunciation, thus making me sound more like a native speaker.
In addition to regular class time, our mighty group of nineteen students will go on excursions to cities and pueblos, including Madrid, Salamanca, Ávila, Toledo, Cuéllar, and Coca. Our professors will integrate course material into our excursions, which will make our experiences in the cities even more beneficial and fun. I went to four of those cities last summer, and each had something incredible to offer. I cannot wait to return!
Look for many more updates to come starting July 1!
Un saludo,
Kelly
